Overview

This preserve consists of several islands east of Deer Island in the Bay of Fundy. Little Mowat is owned by the Nature Trust, and conservation easements are held on Barnes, Mowat and Nubble Islands.

History

Little Mowat Island was given to the Nature Trust in 1990 by Mr. Robert Stewart of Cumberland Foreside, Maine. At the same time conservation easements were set up between the Nature Trust and Mr. Stewart to protect three adjacent islands: Barnes, Mowat and the Nubble.

Ecology

This nature preserve is representative of the general ecology of the Bay of Fundy. The plants are typical of Bay of Fundy islands, while the sea around abounds in interesting marine species. The islands lie on an important bird migration route. Conditions are suitable for the nesting of bald eagles.

Access and Activities

Little Mowat Island is accessible by boat but is not suitable for hiking or picnicking. Barnes, Mowat and Nubble Islands are privately owned and the conservation easement does not imply public access. Please obtain permission from the landowners before accessing the island.

No visiting is allowed between March and September due to the bird breeding season. For more information, please review Environment Canada’s guidelines to avoid disturbance to seabird and waterbird colonies in Canada.

*The property is undeveloped and there are a variety of hazards and risks associated with accessing this preserve. While this nature preserve is open for public access, visitors must assume responsibility for their own actions and safety and are to use the land at their own risk.
