Description: Join our passionate Engagement team for a refreshing guided walk and learn about the emerging spring flowers! Discover the Appalachian Hardwood Forest ephemerals, connect with fellow nature enthusiasts, and enjoy the natural beauty of this nature preserve.
The Sasəkatəkok/ Sasokatokuk Nature Preserve protects an Appalachian Hardwood Forest (AHF), a forest type of which less than 1% remains of its former extent in the Maritimes. This preserve protects 36 hectares (90 acres) of this habitat.
The Sasəkatəkok/ Sasokatokuk Nature Preserve supports a number of rich wet seepage areas and extensive forested wetlands that provide habitat for populations of forest birds species and provincially-rare and uncommon understory plants. These include spring ephemeral flowers – plants that bloom early in the spring then disappear by summertime.
What to Expect:
Guided walk through a rare forest type
Ungroomed trails
Insights from seasoned experts
Networking with fellow nature enthusiasts
What to Bring:
Weather-appropriate clothing, long pants, and hiking shoes/comfortable footwear
Daypack
Lunch, snacks and water
Sunscreen and bug spray
Please note: The terrain at our nature preserves is often uneven, and we will walk in areas that are off-trail and un-maintained. The terrain can be steep, and the trails are in the forest, meaning that rocks and tree roots are often underfoot.
