Description: Following the business portion of our Annual General Meeting (AGM), please join us for a special social gathering and guided hike from 3:15-4:45 pm to celebrate the grand opening and official name unveiling of our new nature preserve in Long Settlement, Carleton County!
Help us celebrate a banner year for land conservation in New Brunswick, which saw the addition of beautiful new preserves in Appalachian Hardwood Forest, along the Wolastoq river valley, and other key habitats. With these additions, our network of protected lands has grown to 14,000 acres and counting!
Explore the ecologically rich land of our new preserve in Long Settlement, which provides essential habitat for many rare species, including white-rimmed shingle lichen, black ash, American lopseed, and Goldie’s woodfern. Towering canopy trees dominate the landscape, transforming the property into a vibrant spectacle of color each fall.
The official preserve name will be unveiled as part of the hike — don't miss out on this historic moment!
Please note: Our guided hike will be approx. 1h30 and should be considered intermediate level as this preserve does not have a trail. Part of the hike will involve using an old access road that is semi-overgrown, and part will take place in the woods toward the cedar forested wetland, with some uneven terrain and natural obstacles. We won’t be in a saturated section of the wetland, so rubber boots are not required, but sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
What to bring:
- Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy hiking boots
- Sunscreen and bug nets
- Water and snacks
