Overview
Tucked away in Elmsville, Charlotte County, Hidden Stream Forest (Official Name Pending) protects 42 hectares (104 acres) of climate-resilient forest and breathtaking wilderness northeast of Saint Andrews and east of the Skutik/St. Croix River.
History
Located on the unceded territory of the Peskotomuhkatiyik and safeguarding many culturally significant species, the Nature Trust officially acquired this preserve in 2025 during our most successful year of conservation to date.
Ecology
Complete with a climate-resilient, mature hardwood forest canopy comprised of eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), American beech (Fagus grandifolia), and red maple (Acer rubrum), this preserve highlights the ecological richness of Charlotte County. Across the property, the forest floor is lined with various species of lichen, red-stemmed feathermoss (Pleurozium schreberi), and beautiful woodland blooms such as red trillium (Trillium erectum) and wood sorrel (Oxalis montana). A unique underground stream, partially hidden by a mossy boulder, traverses the preserve and sustains its rich biodiversity. This preserve also shelters many culturally significant species, including eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis), goldthread (Coptis trifolia), and polypody rock fern (Polypodium virginianum).
