Description: Curious about lichens? Join the Nature Trust of New Brunswick for a hands-on, family-friendly Lichen Learning Experience at Mount Misery Nature Preserve, one of our newest nature preserves on the Kingston Peninsula!

Our Lichen Learning Experience invites participants of all ages to slow down, look closely, and discover the fascinating world of lichens — those colourful, resilient lifeforms quietly thriving on rocks, trees, and soil all around us. This event promises an interpretive hike on a new trail system, an exploration of lichen in their natural habitat, and a microscope station to get a closer look at these tiny wonders growing all around us!

Located along Murphy Cove in unceded Wolastoqiyik territory on the Kingston Peninsula, Mount Misery Nature Preserve offers a diverse topography and protects 31 hectares (77 acres) of forested wetlands, a multitude of mixed wood forest compositions, and an open meadow. This property also has previously established trails, as well as new trails created by our Nature Trust staff, making it a wonderful option for recreational activities like birdwatching.

What to bring:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing, including closed-toed, waterproof/resistant shoes suitable for light hiking

  • Sunscreen and bug spray

  • Water and snacks

  • Optional: Hand lens for viewing lichens up close (some will be provided!)

Please note: Nature Trust preserves are natural, undeveloped properties, which means they can come with uneven terrain, slippery trails, and other hazards. We’ll also be walking into and around forested wetlands to explore lichens in their natural habitat. Please come prepared with adequate, waterproof/resistant footwear.
