The Nature Trust of New Brunswick's team is looking for a Nisoluhket!

The Nisoluhket—one who works the role of facilitating between the Western and Indigenous worldviews—will advance the Nature Trust’s commitment to shared stewardship of the land with Indigenous peoples. This role’s primary responsibility will be assisting and developing the Nature Trust’s progress toward the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.

A new position at the Nature Trust, the Nisoluhket will aid in advancing our organization’s Indigenous engagement goals and priorities outlined in our 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, through review, adjustment and follow through. The position will oversee the development and implementation of shared land stewardship models with the organization’s Indigenous partners; seek and guide opportunities for relationship building and creating new partnerships/collaborations/sharing; and support all departments in their efforts to work meaningfully with Indigenous nations, organizations and communities in peace and friendship.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement Shared Land Stewardship programs in collaboration with Indigenous partners;

  • Facilitate relationship-building and conservation partnerships with Wabanaki nations, organizations, and communities;

  • Coordinate joint monitoring/stewardship activities and incorporate Indigenous history in nature preserve naming and storytelling;

  • Support departments in engaging with Indigenous communities and updating protocols for meaningful engagement;

  • Support the Nature Trust’s partnerships and support roles in the development of Indigenous Protected & Conserved Areas.


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must identify as Indigenous and reside in New Brunswick; 

  • A university degree in a related discipline, i.e. Indigenous Studies, Law, Environment, Sociology, Communications, Human Resources, Leadership Studies, Natural Resources; or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience; 

  • Understanding of New Brunswick’s First Nation communities, culture, and concerns; 

  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building, networking and communication skills, both oral and written;   

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and ability to travel throughout the province as required; 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and strong research skills;

  • Indigenous languages a strong asset; 

  • Experience in environmental conservation, public speaking, or group facilitation is an asset.
