Overview

The MacDonald Nature Preserve consists of 21.42 hectares (52.9 acres) of forested and wetland area, located in Cork Settlement. The property is bisected by a railway line, with the western side primarily wetland and the eastern side containing forest. The wetland is considered a critical wet basin, with the forest surrounding it a critical forest matrix.

History

The Nature Trust acquired this preserve through a generous donation by Charles MacDonald in 2021. The MacDonald Nature Preserve is located within traditional Wabanaki territory.

The Nature Trust is proud to protect this important piece of New Brunswick’s natural heritage in perpetuity.

Ecology

The MacDonald Nature Preserve contains wetland surrounded by tamarack (Larix spp.) and cedar (Thuja occidentalis) softwood forests which may contain uncommon, rare, or at-risk species. The property contains scenic forest on unique topography.

The forested portion of the property consists of Early Successional Forest, which is dominated by pioneer tree species like birch (Betula spp.), poplar (Populus spp.), and red maple (Acer rubrum). The land is home to forest wildlife such as snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus), moose (Acles acles), and porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum).
