Overview

Located in Mascarene, Cedar Crested Cascade (Official Name Pending) is a 21.4-hectare (53-acre) nature preserve abundant with wetland habitats and climate-resilient, mature forests found within the unceded territory of the Peskotomuhkatiyik.

History

Protected in 2025 during our most successful year of conservation yet, where a record-setting 22 properties were established, this preserve lies east of Passamaquoddy Bay, an area that holds deep cultural significance for the Peskotomuhkati people who have fished, hunted, and gathered there for millennia.

Ecology

A true testament to the ecological diversity of Passamaquoddy Bay, 80% of Cedar Crested Cascade (Official Name Pending) is comprised of climate-resilient, mature forests including tolerant mixed wood stands and an expansive Eastern white cedar swamp where the rare blue felt lichen (Degelia plumbea, an S1 species, meaning critically imperiled or of special concern) has been identified. This preserve also protects an alder wetland, a variety of lush mosses, and flowering plants like lambkill (Kalmia angustifolia) and bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi).
