Overview
Located in Aroostook Portage, Victoria County, Balsam and Beyond (Official Name Pending) protects 37 hectares (91 acres) of balsam fir forest, a diversity of ground vegetation, and climate resilient wetlands.
History
Located on the unceded territory of the Wolastoquikyik and safeguarding culturally significant species like eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and black ash (Fraxinus nigra), the Nature Trust officially acquired this preserve in 2025 during our most successful year of conservation to date.
Ecology
While this preserve’s forest is primarily composed of balsam fir (Abies balsamea) mixed wood in the north, stands of climate-resilient, mature eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and wetland can be found in the south, as well as black ash (Fraxinus nigra) throughout. These swamp habitats model suitable conditions for our target species-at-risk lichen, white-rimmed shingle lichen (Fuscopannaria leucosticta, S2) and wrinkled shingle lichen (Pannaria lurida, S1/S2), though none were found during our surveys. A diversity of ground vegetation is also supported on this preserve, including pink lady slippers (Cypripedium acaule), starflower (Trientalis borealis), wild sarsaparilla (Aralia nudicaulis), and orange coral mushroom (Ramariopsis crocea), which brings a burst of colour to the landscape.
