Campaign for coastal lands - progress

Progress to date

How are we doing financially?
As of August 19, 2009, the Nature Trust has raised approximately $800,000 of our $950,000 goal. Thus, in this final year, we must raise an additional $150,000. This sum will enable us to complete land securement and provide for the future stewardship of these landscapes.

What land has been protected?
The Nature Trust has protected, through purchase or agreement, 66% of our land conservation goal. Forty-eight acres on Navy Island have been purchased. A conservation easement on an additional 13 acres is underway. An agreement on lands at Sam Orr’s Pond has been negotiated and we anticipate that we will close on this and a second parcel totaling approximately 130 acres by year-end. Two voluntary stewardship agreements on an additional 120 acres have been signed, and the Province is closing on a 9 acre parcel at the mouth of the preserve. We expect this land will eventually be incorporated by some means into the expanded preserve.

Additional Land Donations
Much of the value of this campaign (but that is not included in the $950,000 above) has come from lands and easements that have been or will be donated for conservation. In total, over $500,000 worth of land or interests in land will have been donated to our campaign when complete.

Matching Funds
Both of our campaign sites are found in the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s (NCC’s) Natural Areas Conservation Plan for the Lower Bay of Fundy, and as a result qualify for funding under the joint Government of Canada - NCC program for the conservation of areas of high ecological importance. NCC has committed $429,000 (out of the $800,000 raised to date) to secure fee simple interest in four key properties. These funds must be matched in order to activate them.
