Minister’s Face: Guidelines for Rock and Ice Climbers

Minister’s Face is home to one of only ten known Peregrine Falcon nesting sites in New Brunswick.  (For you plant-lovers, the cliff is also home to some of New Brunswick’s rarest flowers, including some found nowhere else in the province.)  The cliff is owned by the Nature Trust of New Brunswick – it’s an ecological treasure and we want it to stay this way.

Climbing has not disturbed the Peregrines or rare plants yet.  However, the Minister’s Face Peregrines have been disturbed by people in the past, causing them to abandon one nest location.  This could easily happen again if precautions are not taken.

In order to protect the cliff’s Peregrines and rare plants, the Nature Trust asks any climbers (ice or rock) to respect the following conditions:

  1. Establish rock climbing routes (trad or sport) ONLY after consultation with the Nature Trust of New Brunswick.
  2. Do not rock or ice climb within 600m of the Peregrine nest site between March 15th and August 15th (breeding season); contact the Nature Trust or Department of Natural Resources (Fish and Wildlife Branch) if you are in doubt of where not to climb.
  3. Do not remove vegetation from the cliff face (this is EXTREMELY important given the rare plants living here).
  4. No fires at the base of the cliff at any time.

Remember, there are so few of these birds that disturbing just one pair will seriously impact the New Brunswick Peregrine population.
