Sea Dog Cove Work Day
The Sea Dog Cove work day started at 1:00pm on June 11th. Nearly all of us (besides the stewards) had a hard time finding the preserve, mainly because the roadside sign on the Kennebecasis River side was almost entirely overgrown with small brush. Immediately one of the volunteers set to work clearing the ground in order to make this more visible.
Everyone else headed up the trail on the eastern side of the property, clearing away alders and other large brush along the way.
Along the way to the lookout, we noticed a lot of ATV evidence. It has caused quite a bit of damage especially in the wetter areas. It seems like an entirely new trail has been cut and extensively used by ATVs.
Back on the main trail we noticed many Lady Slippers. They are literally everywhere in the woods, as well was small ones starting up in the trail. Ida and David the stewards pointed out some other interesting plants as well.
We put up an arrow where the trail meets up with the new ATV trail in order to better direct visitors. And when we reached the cliff we put up a cliff warning sign. Tricia and Jessica walked the new ATV trail and placed a No Hunting Sign as well as a No Motorized Vehicle sign up.
Alan and Jessica walked the roughly blue flagged trail down to the shoreline to see what was there. The trail is very steep, but comes out on to a small section of rocky shore which might be nice for hikers to rest. Be warned to any curious hikers it is quite steep and difficult right now!
Back at the road we placed more signs up.
The Western side has almost no ATV activity, and has a beautiful field full of flowering black berry bushes. It would be such a nice spot for picnics. Ida and David will be mowing a trail down the water on this side of the property to ensure visitors have a trail.
