Western Isles – Easements
This preserve consists of several islands east of Deer Island in the Bayof Fundy. Little Mowat Island was given to the Nature Trust in 1990 by Mr. Robert Stewart of Cumberland Foreside, Maine. At the same time conservation easements were set up between the Nature Trust and Mr. Stewart to protect three adjacent islands: Barnes, Mowat and the Nubble. The Nature Trust is responsible for monitoring and enforcing the conditions of the easements on these islands. Barnes Island is privately-owned and the easement does not imply public access. Please obtain permission from the landowners before accessing the island. The Stewart Nature Preserve is representative of the general ecology of the Bay of Fundy. Here are plants typical of Bay of Fundy islands while the sea around abounds in interesting marine species. The islands lie on an important bird migration route. Conditions are suitable for the nesting of bald eagles.
