Trail Work at Caughy-Taylor
As the new stewardship coordinator, I spent last weekend working along the Caughey-Taylor trail system. Although the weather was supposed to be rather wet, it ended up being a fantastically sunny weekend. Unfortunately I missed meeting up with Wayne and Susan, the preserve stewards, due to unforeseen circumstances - but both they and myself spent a few hours exploring the newly flagged trail around the Marsh. Besides the bugs the new trail system seemed great - but still needs quite a bit of work as some areas may be a bit too wet in the spring.
We were lucky enough to see Osprey soaring about the Marsh, and see some young in their nest along the Hydro-line.
I posted no hunting signs, and replaced old trail markers with new ones. I spent some time cleaning up the garbage along the road way and of course spent a lot of time enjoying both the Chickahominy Mountain and Berry Point hikes. I'm pretty sure a moose even followed me out to Berry Point.
Over the course of the weekend it was obvious that Caughey-Taylor, especially the Sam Orr's Pond side, are enjoyed by many in the Saint Andrews area as there was a continual stream of parked cars and hikers.
